Making the Bed, Why and How

Every morning, most of us wake up and make the bed. It’s just part of the daily routine for many people. There are probably some that don’t. Only the other day, out of the mouth of a teenager came the statement 'why should we make the bed, we only get back in it later?' We suppose they have a point but there are those that simply cannot leave the bed unmade.

For some people, it goes one step beyond plumping the pillows, smoothing the sheets and throwing the duvet back to where it should be. There are those that have perfected it to a fine art! They can make it look like something out of a showroom. There are Instagram feeds full of reels as people show you how to make the perfect bed, how to fold the corners of the sheet properly, how to smooth the sheets and the duvet, how to arrange the pillows and generally make it look like a bed that you couldn’t possibly ruin by getting into it.

So, why do we make the bed and what are those top tips to achieve that showroom style?

Why Make the Bed?

Helps to Keep Things Clean

While you can’t stop dust from accumulating and there is no way to prevent dirt and dust from building up, you can minimise the dust that settles on your bed by covering it with a duvet or comforter. Leaving the duvet curled up in a pile at the end of the bed offers no protection to the sheet that you sleep on every night.

Encourages Routine and Good Habits

Getting out of bed and making it, drawing the curtains and generally tidying the bedroom starts the day off well. Tidy room, tidy mind. It’s like you are accomplishing something before you start the day and helps you adopt good habits. It is one of those keystone habits that can encourage you to make smart choices and adopt best practices throughout the day.

Sheets and Pillows Keep Their Shape

Looking after your things means they will last longer. Plumping your pillows every morning when you make the bed will keep them looking fuller and better for longer and your sheets will also last longer if you take good care of them.

Promotes Better Sleep

Getting into a crumpled up bed doesn’t promote the best night’s sleep. How many times have you got into a bed with clean sheets and felt all cosy? Making the bed means you are going to get back into a nice comfortable bed each night.

It Makes the Room Look Nicer

The chances are, if you were showing guests your house, you would shut the door on your room if you hadn’t made the bed. Making your bed makes the room look better. A nicely made bed really adds something to a room.

The Basics of Making the Bed

Ever seen those hotel room beds and thought 'why do they look so good'. In some hotels, you even get a towel folded into a swan! Well, there is a knack to it but we are just going to share a few basic tips to help you make the bed properly each day.

·      Start with a naked mattress – everything off and put to one side

·      Put the fitted sheet on making sure it sits over all the corners and has no wrinkles or creases

·      Lay out the top sheet with the large hem at the top of the bed, with the hospital corners message if you know how to

·      Put the duvet, bedspread or comforter on last, make sure it is even on both sides and smooth it out to make sure there are no wrinkles

·      Finally, add the pillows. Plump the pillows by placing your hands on each end of the pillow and squeezing them together and pulling them apart. Repeat a couple of times until the pillow looks fuller. Place them next to each other and add your decorative cushions. Then repeat every day!
